The past perfect tense

The past perfect tense may be simple or continuous. Both are used in this newspaper text: Missing man had received bad news

Police found the body of a man they had been looking for since he left home three weeks ago. He had left his home in Redfield, Bristol after he had recently received some bad news.

The past perfect simple consists of had + past participle.

The past perfect continuous consist of had been + -ing form.
