ABSTRACT

Managers are more coaches, creating the conditions under which the personnel perform best. Due to the flatter organisation the personnel receive more responsibilities and authorities. The work has also become more complex and requires better trained personnel. These personnel are not primarily motivated by kick-in-the-ass but more by two factors described by F. Herzberg: motivating factors and hygiene factors. There has been a great deal of criticism of Herzberg in connection with the small population on which the theory is based. Other studies have been performed in which different results have been presented. In studies with larger samples, it turns out that Herzberg’s theory is supported. Enrichment of tasks is an important pillar in the motivation of personnel. The enterprise will have to thoroughly investigate to what extent this is possible.
