ABSTRACT

This chapter describes four ways of getting the message across clearly: Use little jargon, Hedge appropriately, and Use clear pronoun references. There are many hedging words and phrases so it is important to choose one that reflects the strength of the supporting evidence. The use of the word probably in the sentence below indicates that the evidence is reasonably strong. In order to make a text look more formal, writers sometimes use phrases that actually add nothing to the meaning of the sentence. Some writers find it difficult to stick to the key points. They write in the same manner as they speak: full of digressions and too wordy.
