ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book considers the role society plays in shaping culture, and how the culture of groups, associations and communities can shape cities. It explores ‘Engraining culture and innovation to inform a city’s identity’, and seeks to consider how cultural practices and the embracing of digital-age technologies can collectively inform a city’s identity. The book covers ‘The culture of innovation as a stimulus to a city’s economy’ and how the concentration of people, resources, ideas and collective knowledge, provide an opportunity to foster a culture of innovation that can potentially yield breakthroughs and greater economic development. It also considers various mechanisms of stimulus for a city’s growth in the digital age. The book also explores the collective efforts of the thought leaders who have contributed to this publication, that we hope to reveal and respond to present and future urban challenges.
