ABSTRACT

The Facility Engineering and Maintenance Department is essentially responsible for the management of services and processes that support the core business of the organisation which, in the case of hotels, is the provision of goods and services guests require. Scheduled maintenance refers to activities initiated by the Facility Engineering and Maintenance Department based on a formal work order that identifies a known problem or need. The Chief Engineer is mainly responsible for maintaining a hotel’s physical state; they take care of the repairs and engineering works required to ensure that all equipment, machines, furniture, fixtures and fittings are in good mechanical and technical conditions, and are fully operational. The future of successful hotel organisations hinges, to a great extent, on the ability of hotel management to recognise the importance of the contributions of the engineering department to providing guest services and maintaining a high return on investment for property owners.
