ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses adverse childhood experiences in a context of tolerable and toxic stress, and refers to research, policy, and illustrative examples of practice in the early years. Epigenetics is described to give an understanding ofto the inter-generational impact from adversities. The concepts of approach and avoidance motivation, and resilience, are explored by reviewing research and examples from the field. Current responses in the form of early intervention for extended families, which includes the use of video feedback, and the implementation of theory into trauma-informed practice, are presented to the reader.
