ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the significance of an attachment figure forto a child’s ability and capacity to learn. Interpretation of attachment theory into practice, in the early years, focuses upon comprehension of secure attachment. It can be challenging for practitioners to extrapolate from this knowledge base, and to comprehend the effects of insecure attachment and attachment disorders. This information is clarified with recourse to research, and practice, with particular emphasis on the impact of secure or insecure status upon a child’s learning. Complex trauma is described to the reader and links presented between relationships and behavioural regulation.
