ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on a wide range of material, principally in the form of our own research studies and those conducted in collaboration with colleagues and educators. It provides an ongoing dialogue and research collaboration that centres on literacy and literacy education in the current social milieu. In some ways the digital always seeks to define our situation. But it is important to acknowledge at the start that our situation is a very particular one. After all we are both white middle-class academics working in an affluent and privileged context, one with a high investment in technology and widespread availability of digital tools. Digital communication is ubiquitous, even though it sits alongside literacies, other meaning making practices, and things that have much more varied histories.
