ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we consider the responsibilities faced by researchers and educators in an age characterised by social injustice, environmental degradation and political instability. We develop an ethical stance that emerges out of a concern for what happens when people and things come into relation. Expanding on Massumi’s (2015) ideas on an ethic of caring, we describe three ambitions that we suggest combine to produce an alternative to more familiar approaches to critical theory and pedagogy. We illustrate ways in which this ethic of caring informs our work and outline how this might be important for literacy researchers and practitioners.
