ABSTRACT

A book full of interest and charm has appeared from the pen of Mr. Rowland Prothero. It is entitled “The Psalms in Human Life,” and it is designed to illustrate the part played by the Psalter in the spiritual experience of great souls throughout the ages. Pious members of the congregation would assemble before the Service began and prepare their hearts for worship by readings from the Psalms. There were saintly men who went further and sanctified in this manner some part at least of every night. Literally imitating the Psalmists, they would arise at midnight and offer their tribute of worship. The Psalms have played no insignificant part. The stronghold of the individual soul in the hour of trouble, they have served to hearten the multitude in times of national crisis. Especially have they stood the Jewish warrior in good stead.
