ABSTRACT

A quaint ceremony marked the advent of the solemn Festival last evening in those Jewish homes in which old-time observances are cherished. Happiness is the desire of every living creature, certainly of every human creature. For happiness is not only the chief desire of men; it is what the Father of all men desires for them. It is by happiness that they live, and by happy living that they serve. A happy new year—let us give the phrase a higher meaning, then, and, by happiness, mean blessedness— the blessedness that lies in the consciousness of self-fulfilment, of having played our part on our little stage worthily—the consciousness of having lived. And then as to the sources of happiness. There are people who live on the sunny side of life, and who ask little more of the coming year than that it shall be as bright as the dying one.
