ABSTRACT

The Psalm is one long glorification, one long benediction, of God for His majesty and His condescension, for the awe-inspiring revelation of His might in Nature and in History, for His mercies also to sad and lowly folk, to the fatherless and the widow and to them that languish in the prison-house. It is an expression of humble submission to this august God, a song of thanksgiving for His goodness, a profession of faith in His existence and His sovereign rule. “Blessed be God”—it is a cry of adoration and of gratitude. All the primal emotions that lift the human soul out of the narrow environment of this earthly life are gathered up into it. Religion is still the overmastering force in millions of lives, still their one strength and consolation. Whereas Religion is essentially the consciousness of God and the endeavour, no matter by what means, to give effect to that consciousness in the daily life.
