ABSTRACT

Like the Prophetic teaching which it embodies, the Bible, too, has proved itself “great and glorious.” It is wonderful to think how, after the lapse of centuries, the Jew still goes back year after year from Deuteronomy to Genesis with unabated zest for his Sabbath readings. The Torah, with its discipline, its idealism, its consoling promises, has been, from first to last, the “secret bread” that has comforted the Jewish heart, nourished the Jewish spirit. Throughout the war, and in practically every place where our armies are on active service, devoted men and women have provided copies of the Bible for the troops. Many of the men have joined themselves into leagues for the regular reading of the Scriptures, and frequent testimonies have been offered to the benefit derived from this practice.”.
