ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the design from an applied arts perspective—a perspective commonly employed by such disciplines as industrial design, graphic design, and interior design in the course of product planning. Industrial design is a combination of applied art and applied science to create and execute design solutions for problems of form, usability, user ergonomics, engineering, marketing, brand development, and sales. Industrial design can be employed in various ways and at various points in the product planning process, whether it is resourced from an in-house company department or outsourced from an industrial design consulting firm. Graphic design refers to a number of artistic and professional disciplines that focus on visual communication and presentation. Graphic design principles may be applied to each graphic art element individually and/or to the final composition. Page layout is the part of graphic design that deals with the arrangement and style treatment of page content.
