This chapter provides an introduction to the themes of this volume of case studies; a review of historiography, some contextual history of London, crime and punishment in the late eighteenth century, and contemporary views of public execution; a qualitative and quantitative analysis of homicide; the law of homicide; and a note on the structure of the rest of the book.
