ABSTRACT
This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts presents in the subsequent chapters. This part presents both an inventory of anticipated hazardous areas and a set of criteria that can be used for appropriate planning purposes, as in road construction and timber harvest. It shows other dimensions to the problems associated with reclamation and rehabilitation from a landscape designer’s point of view—the creation of something that will not only be practical but visually aesthetic. The preservation of nature in wilderness form, landscape aesthetics, and evaluation methods for assessing priorities of landscape management have been hotly debated issues throughout the twentieth century. Aldo Leopold was influential in helping to establish the first federal wilderness area. He had been a forester with the Forest Service from 1909 to 1918 but resigned when his ideas were in conflict with their policies. When conservation-preservation policies of other countries are considered, England and Japan show contrasting histories of development.
