ABSTRACT

Gender identity minorities push the boundaries of gender norms in society. However, they continue to face hardships for breaking with these norms. Increasingly, organizations are expected to take a stand in promoting gender identity inclusivity. Unfortunately, many employers are ill-equipped to do so. We argue that taking a queer approach to management allows organizations to discontinue counterproductive cycles of promoting gender inclusivity, while simultaneously reinforcing gender binaries through organizational policies and practices. We make recommendations for organizations, allies, researchers and practitioners attempting to enact truly inclusive work environments, as well as tips for resilience in gender identity minority populations.
