ABSTRACT

This chapter deals in sequence with the present position of synagogal organization; the organizations connected with religious life; with charitable organizations; and lastly with a number of institutions of a significant or typical nature. It also deals with the British Jewish Community it is probably more appropriate in terms of ‘organizations’, rather than ‘organization’, as the latter word implies some central and controlling body for every phase of Jewish communal life, as was, and to a certain extent is, the position in the Gemeinden in some Central European countries. The synagogues in the provinces were in such places as Birmingham, Chatham, Edinburgh, Exeter, Falmouth, Hull, Liverpool, Manchester, Penzance, Plymouth, Swansea—most of them ports, and all of them providing opportunities for small traders. In many of these the Jewish community has grown considerably as shown by the number of synagogues.
