ABSTRACT
This short introductory chapter sets out the main theme of the book: How is digitalization related to the major social and environmental challenges of our time? The digital revolution is currently changing the daily lives of billions of people worldwide. It is also disrupting the economy, generating new opportunities and creating new challenges. At the same time, the world faces two major challenges, which need rapid change: to facilitate a good life for an increasing number of people and to do so in an environmentally sustainable manner. The question emerges of whether digital tools can help to solve the social and ecological challenges.
