ABSTRACT

The second chapter is also short. It gives an introduction to the history of digitalization, considering in particular the actors that were centrally involved in the development of the internet. The analysis focuses on the role of the military, business corporations and alternative movements in the USA. The theme of the chapter is that technology and, therefore, also digital technologies are not value-free tools. Instead, technology always embodies the interests and intentions of its makers. This is why it is important to consider who has formed it in the past, who is developing it today and who might influence it in the future.
