ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book serves as a reference point for key developments related to the ways in which the digital turn has shaped the study of the English language and of how the resulting methodological approaches have permeated other disciplines within the humanities. It draws on modern linguistics and discourse analysis for its analytical methods and applies these approaches to the exploration and theorisation of issues within arts and the humanities. The book covers a range of approaches within modern linguistics that rely on digital data and methods in their analysis. It focuses on different varieties of the English language and the digital humanities, and we are aware of the limitations of exploring and theorising issues in the digital humanities through a lens that is mainly restricted to one language.
