ABSTRACT

Women are far more likely to present with symptoms related to hair and nails than men, often for cosmetic reasons. This chapter presents a discussion on the causes, diagnosis, and investigation of symptoms related to hair and nails. It provides a general practitioner overview, differential diagnosis, possible investigations, and top tips for dealing with symptoms related to hair and nails. The symptoms discussed are abnormal nails, excess body hair, hair loss, and itchy scalp. The differential diagnosis includes common, occasional, and rare causes of the symptoms. Hair loss is a distressing symptom for both genders. Young men may fret about self-image, and women are horrified at the cosmetic disaster unfolding.
