ABSTRACT

Urbanisation in India’s northeastern region has been influenced by a number of factors, in which the colonial rule and its imperialistic policies made the basic footprint and had considerable impact. Urbanisation in the region was further boosted by the post-independent infrastructure development activities and the political policies of the country. However, in the region, urbanisation is found to have mainly concentrated in the capital cities and district headquarters. Like any other cities in the country in the recent past, the cities in the region have started facing various urban problems, ranging from the traffic congestion, inadequate public transport and scarcity of water to lack of space for parking, footpaths, etc. There is very little room for horizontal expansion of the hill cities, and it makes the present study very relevant.
