ABSTRACT

Street vending is an important source of living for a large number of people in urban areas in India. However, due to street vendors, city dwellers as well as administrations face several problems related to traffic, land use patterns, infrastructure and social abuse. Silchar is one fast-developing town in Assam where the street vendors are found to come from different social backgrounds. The study found that the satiations of the vendors in Silchar are much similar to vendors in other cities in India, and a proper policy for their survival and development is an immediate need.
