ABSTRACT

The present study was initiated with the objective of making an inter-district comparison of growth of urbanisation in Assam. It also seeks to examine the factors determining growth of urbanisation across the districts of the state during 2001–2010. While the percentage shares of urban population to the total population has increased rapidly in India during 2001–2011, it has slowed down in Assam during the reference period. There seems to be disparity in urban growth across the districts. Estimates of a fixed effect panel regression model revealed that during the reference period, an improvement in health infrastructure and energy consumption has led to de-urbanisation across the districts, while growth of urbanisation in the state was complemented by improvement in educational infrastructure and warehousing facility during the same period.
