ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how, if the routings of all the products produced by a job shop and additional data needed for a standard facility layout project are available, then the Production Flow Analysis algorithms available in the academic software Production Flow Analysis and Simplification Toolkit (PFAST) could analyze the routings to determine a “best fit” layout for the job shop. It focuses how to use the different PFAST outputs to design a Functional Layout, a Cellular Layout, and Hybrid Cellular Layouts intermediate between the Functional and Cellular Layouts using data for a hypothetical 12-machine, 19-part machine shop. PFAST uses two sampling techniques – Product-Quantity (PQ) Analysis and Product-Quantity-Revenue Analysis (PQ$) to extract a smaller sample of parts from a large product mix. PQ$ Analysis is a dual-criterion approach for Product Mix Segmentation that is a better alternative to the single-criterion approach of PQ Analysis.
