ABSTRACT

Michael Porter said that strategy “means deliberately choosing a different set of activities to deliver a unique mix of value.” The concept of Performance Drivers cascades the idea of “choosing a different set of activities” to every level of the organization. Focusing on the Performance Drivers is a concept that is essentially embodied in “The Process” made famous by Nick Saban, coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, a perennial championship favorite in college football. We often challenge leaders to track their actual time for a few days and compare it to their Performance Drivers. This forces them to look at the gap between what they are doing and what they should be doing to deliver the critical results for their organization. In one heart-wrenching situation, we worked with a leader whose marriage was on the rocks and his relationship with his kids was non-existent.
