ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book focuses on two dimensions of cosmopolitanism: the ability to skillfully and confidently navigate foreign locations and cultures and identification with geopolitical spaces beyond the national state. It demonstrates that the nature and spatial distribution of the binational couples’ international networks uniquely structure the partners’ lives and world outlook: they structure the character of social interaction and communication and the amount and quality of assistance that they receive, they structure and constrain seasonal routines, and they structure the partners’ interest in local and world events. One aspect that probably distinguishes Euro-couples from other binational couples around the world is the extent to which the partners involved develop cosmopolitan identifications.
