ABSTRACT

A successful environmental compliance program requires several key elements starting with a commitment by management to support the integration of compliance into the corporate culture. Management’s commitment to environmental compliance needs to go beyond a simple statement and requires integration into organizational elements such as training, requirements governance, work procedures, process improvement, stakeholder relationships, public affairs messaging and commitment of resources. A continual emphasis on the importance of compliance by top levels of management coupled with leadership styles that promote and encourage employee participation is instrumental in developing a strategy for a sustainable compliance program. The incorporation of regulatory subject matter experts into the organization and the utilization of integrated planning teams in compliance decision-making processes help remove ambiguity and enhance management of compliance risk.
