ABSTRACT

A critical element in creating a successful and sustainable environmental compliance program is an established process for flowing down regulatory requirements to all relevant aspects of the organization. An effective requirements flow down process is one that provides a consistent means for communicating regulatory requirements and includes participation from all organizational elements as stakeholders in the decision-making process and the development of implementation strategies. Organizational elements that have environmental compliance responsibilities within a company or corporate structure can be utilized specifically in the process of governing and communicating requirements internally within the organization. Successful requirements flow down processes are developed to be a foundational part of the company and include documented roles, responsibilities, authorities and procedures/instructions at each participating level of the company. A requirements flow down process that provides for the consistent flow of clear and accessible information is better positioned to identify and implement applicable regulatory requirements in a timely and compliant manner.
