Introduction

This chapter explores why an intellectual biography of JRD Tata is important, not only to understand his business philosophy but also his wider vision of philanthropy. It also introduces some basic concepts needed to understand JRD from his own perspective such as his rethinking of concepts such as trusteeship, private and the public, and social responsibility.
