ABSTRACT

Philanthropy is more than just the act of distributing funds to the needy. This is possible only if there is a conscious attempt to rethink some of the important concepts that underlie our understanding of business and society. This chapter discusses some of these binaries that have been influential in modern business such as the concepts of the private and the public, autonomy and accountability, power and responsibility, and freedom and duty. These ideas are largely discussed through the way JRD understood and used these terms in the conduct of his business and philanthropy.
