ABSTRACT

After an analysis of JRD’s approach to business and philanthropy through a consideration of concepts such as trusteeship and profit, this chapter examines one facet of his personal life. One might say that if a person is ethical in her business practices then there is a very good possibility that she is also an ethical person in her personal life. JRD exemplifies this commonality of ethical action across his professional and personal lives. In this chapter, I draw upon one aspect of his personality – writing and answering an enormous number of letters to known and unknown people – to highlight the ethical attitudes that were so important to his personal and professional life.
