ABSTRACT

In Chapter 15 we consider three preintegrative forms of relationships among constituents: functional independence, the coactive form, and the interactive form. These represent the initial three stages in the process of primordial integration. In this chapter we explore the partially integrated and fully integrated forms (cf. Fig. 15.1, page 210). These represent the two final stages in that process. In the transition from the preintegrative to the integrative forms, the process of scaffolding plays a particularly important role. Let us therefore begin by considering that process.
