ABSTRACT
The orthogenetic principle describes development in terms of a dialectical tension between the processes of differentiation and those of hierarchic integration. In Chapters 15 and 16 we considered the process of integration. In this chapter we consider the process of differentiation, and the closely related process of specialization. In so doing we also explore further the relationship between differentiation and integration.
