ABSTRACT

The process of development is driven by at least three types of forces: suboptimal conformations between a structure and its context; the dialectical tension between idiogenic and collective constraints; and large changes in the number of constituents that must be integrated within the structure itself. The role of conformational discrepancies was explored in Chapters 8 and 9, and the relationship between idiogenic and collective constraints in Chapters 4, 5, 15, 16, and 17. In this final chapter we consider how changes in the size of a structure affect changes in its form.
