ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a four-step overview of SDOH evaluations for public health programs. It begins with an overview of how to use SDOH in evaluation. Next, readers will learn how to select a social determinant in the evaluation of public health programs. Because not all public health programs can feasibly address a SDOH, this chapter will discuss when SDOH focused evaluations are appropriate and realistic and when they are not. Theories, frameworks, and paradigms help shape SDOH focused evaluation and these will be discussed along with examples of their use in SDOH efforts. The final step in the evaluation process is to create a SDOH evaluation plan and implement it. This chapter concludes with encouraging evaluators to engage the community, address health inequalities, inequities, and disparities, and address the root causes of disparities at the population level for the health and benefit of future generations.
