ABSTRACT

Understanding the facts about SDOH is a necessity for public health evaluators interested in reshaping evaluation to include SDOH. This chapter begins with Wilkinson and Marmot’s 10 solid facts about SDOH. SDOH evaluations should be supported by scientifically supported evidence. Readers will explore programs and policies that are evidence based and learn from examples of how these have been implemented in communities across the US. Health in All Policies is emerging as a critical approach to building health equity. Readers will learn from a variety of programs that are integrating this approach into their health programs, transportation systems, health care access, and policy making systems. Several programs address SDOH, and sociostructural factors like racism, discrimination, and implicit bias provide a framework for how communities and evaluators can implement SDOH programming. This chapter concludes with examples of private-sector programming that targets SDOH intervention points.
