ABSTRACT
This chapter provides an introduction to the field of information technology (IT). Definitions of IT are offered because the term is used today to describe both IT staff and computer systems. Computer systems are introduced and processor memory and peripheral devices are briefly covered. The chapter continues by examining IT careers: Both specific types of careers in fields like system administration and software development and expectations of a career in IT, including the need for continuing education and an understanding of computer ethics. The chapter ends with a focus on various technology-related impacts on society.
