ABSTRACT

A brief look at storage sizes (i.e., bits, bytes, and words) begins in this chapter. This is followed by a look at input; output devices are discussed, including those devices that are both input and output. Storage devices are described next. The emphasis here is on magnetic disk storage technology, including disk block indexing and RAID. Next, optical disc, solid-state storage, and magnetic tape storage are all covered. The chapter then focuses on the I/O subsystem, including forms of I/O communication, types of I/O modules, and interrupts. The chapter concludes with health concerns such as carpal tunnel syndrome, ergonomics, and user interface design issues.
