ABSTRACT

Since 1987 the Heads of State or Government of the Member States of SAARC have reiterated the need to build and reinforce regional cooperation to address the challenges posed by climate change. The SAARC leaders have taken several steps like the SAARC Convention on Cooperation on Environment; the SAARC Environment Action Plan; Dhaka Declaration on Climate Change; SAARC Action Plan on Climate Change; Establishment of SAARC Food Security Reserve etc. High priority accorded to the issues – food, rising temperature, floods, and droughts – as a result of climate change can be seen from several directives issued by successive SAARC Summits and the Meetings of the SAARC Heads of State and the SAARC Environment Ministers respectively. Follow-up discussions have taken place including the formation of an Expert Group Meeting on Climate Change.
