ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the initial work of identifying agency and programmatic priorities to be included in the performance management system. It’s important to establish what is appropriate to include in the Performance Management System and what is not appropriate to include. All activities performed within the agency are not included in the Performance Management System. This chapter discusses the difference between goals and objectives, provides examples of each and references supporting templates available in the appendix. Example goals, objectives and supporting measures are provided from the agency and programmatic perspective. The examples in practice include performance measures for components of the strategic plan, public health improvement plan, a public health program and the workforce development plan.
