ABSTRACT

The performance management system will vary from one public health agency to another. The development and implementation phase is no slight effort. The Performance Management System provides a centralized location to track important initiatives, allows for centralized reporting, and allows for appropriate and timely decision making. If you can get accurate performance measurement, the data you generate will tell you where you are, how you are doing and where you are going. The initial goal is to focus on identifying priorities at the agency level – often through the various plans (strategic plan, workforce development plan, health improvement plan, etc.) – as well as the programmatic level to develop a comprehensive and meaningful performance management system. This kind of dynamic system must be built to accommodate the ever-changing community and agency needs. This chapter will focus on the implementation and maintenance phases of a successful performance management system.
