ABSTRACT

The doping rules are also relevant in respect of what drugs sports physicians may legally prescribe to the athletes. The drugs on the prohibited list are also relevant to what drugs pharmaceutical companies might choose to produce and sell to athletes. The tunnel vision of the international debate on doping can be explained in many ways. However, it is clear that the fact that it may have severe personal repercussions for athletes and sports physicians to speak publicly and negatively about the doping rules serves as a strong damper on a critical and nuanced public dialogue. The tunnel vision in the debate on doping is mainly caused by the dream of a doping-free sport. A dream that has only grown stronger since the introduction of the doping policy in the mid-1960s. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
