ABSTRACT

Examine this patient's fundi.

A whitish, pale oedematous retina.

Look at the macular area for the peculiar round 'cherry red' spot (bright red spot on the fovea).

Note that the narrowed arterioles are attenuated and there may be streaky haemorrhages around the vessels.

The retinal veins are narrowed and oligaemic.

The optic disc may be pale and atrophied (see Case 65).

Do not forget to check visual acuity (vision is completely lost as a result of sudden complete blindness in the affected eye).
