ABSTRACT

The Great Orme is a headland of Carboniferous Limestone that rises to a height of 679ft situated to the west of the resort of Llandudno. Last century saw the rapid growth and demise of an important copper mining industry. A number of mineral veins have been identified; they predominantly strike north-south with steep dips to the west and are most developed in the Pyllau valley to Bryniau Poethion areas. Construction work for the reclamation scheme uncovered exposures of deeply dissected vein rock around the Vivians shafthead; this disclosed what now is accepted as an early mined land surface. Worked out spoilfilled veins with rotted dolomite wall rock are clearly discernible. The area of archaeological interest is situated in a fenced enclosure with locked access. There is no public admittance, however, reasonable views can be obtained from the high ground surrounding the site.
