ABSTRACT

The author met Bisi through an American woman in exile in Bristol who by virtue of our similar backgrounds and involvement in the Arts thought we would enjoy meeting each other. Next to Sarah, Bisi is the griotte the author had known the longest. Bisi has matured as a visual artist. This maturity necessitates accepting the lived impact of certain Eurocentric influences, which in turn create space for artistic production, which is quintessentially a cultural métissage. In so-called multicultural Britain, White English culture is still seemingly pervasive and privileged over other cultures. Hence, there is a strong argument among cultural nationalists that Black and métis(se) children's education should be infused with a heavy dose of the cultures of their "minority" parents – Black continental African, African Caribbean and South Asian. The African influences are most apparent in Bisi's art.
