ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information about communication between individual people. It includes accounts of how speech and non-verbal communication enable us to relate to one another. There is also comment on how we present ourselves to others, how we perceive other people, and on barriers to communication. For interpersonal communication to happen, there must be some means of contact with the other person. There are two principal means of contact: non-verbal communication and speech. A game is an interpersonal strategy used to put someone down. Interpersonal communication is most important in that it helps define our relationships with other people. It is possible to categorize interpersonal communication and the situations in which it occurs in terms of oppositions. Interpersonal communication both defines and is defined by gender. Interpersonal communication varies according to the culture in which it happens. One of the main forms of interpersonal communication is a conversation between two people.
