ABSTRACT

Think-aloud protocols, discussion among learners, diary to the teacher and analytical thinking. The ability to think critically is a central goal of university education and our capacity to develop this ability through traditional distance education has been relatively straightforward. Through essays, reports and journals students have been able to demonstrate their ability to plan, research, develop and communicate a sustained and supported argument or belief. Students are practising teachers and study by distance education. Electronic supports such as listserv and forum are an integral component of the subject. The emphasis of the assessment in this example is for postgraduate students to enhance their teaching practice by immersion in a metacognitive environment. The process of assessment is individual – a journey revealed rather than simply the arrival at a destination. Students who are able to relate their three learning domains will do better than students who are unable to go beyond their actions.
