ABSTRACT

The procedures or techniques to be carried out are specified, and usually a benchmark is set by which competence is judged. Abilities assessed using these methods include using equipment, following detailed procedures and protocols, and applying theory to practice. Teaching and assessing procedures and techniques at a distance has often been difficult, unless residential schools or face-to-face sessions are organized for the purpose. Workplace mentoring and assessment schemes have gained considerable popularity in recent times the learners appoint an appropriately skilled mentor/assessor with whom they practise procedures and techniques in their workplace (or lifelike setting) until they have achieved the standards specified by the educational institution. The range of skills to be learnt covers knowledge of both equipment and procedures in all aspects of neonatal emergency management. When the proposals reach their final stage, a residential one-day seminar is organized in which the students present their work to their own group and receive individual feedback from all participants.
